Metro Workers Fired, Union Screeches

In late July – on the day I had ankle surgery, in fact – a Silver Line train derailed at East Falls Church. Luckily, no serious injuries occurred when the train jumped the tracks, but thousands were delayed that day, hundreds more were shaken up, and Metro launched an investigation into the incident.

The result?

Metro has fired six employees following an investigation of the July 29 derailment of a Silver Line train outside East Falls Church, and six more terminations or suspensions are pending, the agency said, after an internal review determined workers had falsified track inspection records.

The transit agency said it has taken disciplinary action against 28 people since the incident occurred, representing “nearly half of the track inspection department,” General Manager Paul J. Wiedefeld said. The department consists of about 60 people. After the incident, Metro opened a police investigation into the actions leading up to the derailment. No arrests have been made, but prosecutors have been briefed on the findings and are “taking the matter under advisement,” Metro said.

“The internal review determined that certain employees in the track department falsified track inspection records,” Wiedefeld said. “I want the board, our employees and our customers to know that this review revealed a disturbing level of indifference, lack of accountability and flagrant misconduct in a portion of Metro’s track department, which is completely intolerable. Further, it is reprehensible that any supervisor or mid-level manager would tolerate or encourage this behavior, or seek to retaliate against those who objected.”

So it looks like Metro knew of the flaws in the tracks for over a year, according to this report. Apparently, when the National Transportation Safety Board interviewed Metro officials, transcripts suggested Metro officials believed inspectors may have falsified inspection records for up to three years. And yet, the corrupt monkeys who were falsifying inspection records were allowed to continue operating with impunity…

…until the derailment.

The proactive thing to do would have been to fix the tracks when the flaws were discovered. The reactive thing, which is what Metro is doing, is to go on a firing spree.

Not that these fuckwits don’t deserve to be fired!

The union rep is particularly odious. “It’s not the workers’ faaaaaault! They weren’t given proper traiiiiiining! It’s all the leeeeeeadership’s faaaaault!”

Jackie Jeter, president of Amalgamated Transit Union Local 689, said after the announcement that the union will conduct a separate investigation into the circumstances that led to the firings — and if she decides they were unjustified, she said, the union will probably fight the terminations.

Jeter said that she believes Metro management may be placing the blame on individual workers who never received the training or instruction to properly perform their jobs.

“What they’ve done is not necessarily falsification. … There are a lot of nuances here,” Jeter said. “If someone actually went out and falsified the work that they do, then that’s one thing. If there is a culture of how they report, and what they’re told to do … that’s something else.”

There’s no nuance. You had barely literate halfwits doing track inspections falsifying reports, and she’s claiming they were essentially too stupid to know there was something wrong with the tracks, because that’s how they always did things!

And if they didn’t know something was wrong with the tracks (which apparently is not true, based on the fact that Metro officials knew for more than a year about the problem, and on the fact that the Metro safety officer Robert Davis in an interview with an inspector who had been overseeing the crossover near East Falls Church in early August literally asked him about inconsistencies and false claims in his report), should they have been doing that job in the first place?

Oh, I forgot. They can’t be fired, because the union will scream bloody murder! After all, they don’t care about passenger safety or comfort. They care about protecting the jobs of well paid, incompetent, cock goblins and will sue to ensure the barely literate dick weasels stay on their jobs, despite their galling ineptitude and outright fraud.

And that’s precisely what the president of Amalgamated Transit Union Local 689 is threatening to do. The person who called the bungling monkeys who falsified inspection records too stupid to know what they were doing, said the union would fight their terminations after it investigates the circumstances that led to the dismissals.

Because it’s not the track inspectors’ fault that they had no idea what the hell they were doing in a job they were hired to do ostensibly based on their skills and knowledge! Because that’s what they’ve always done.

This union needs to go. Before someone else dies thanks to Metro’s fraud, corruption, and incompetence. As does every single manager, supervisor, and inspector involved in this shady business.

This is what you have when an agency is unaccountable, ruled by a corrupt union, and fed by benefits that give federal workers extra money to ride public transportation, incentivizing continued use of an unsafe and broken transportation system.

I’m thrilled the barely coherent, incompetent weasels are facing consequences, but a part of me wonders if it’s too little, too late.

Special Snowflakes Find Out Their Fuckery Doesn’t Fly in the Real World

And they find out the hard way.

Special snowflake gets internship at a firm that requires employees to dress professionally.

Special snowflake notices one member of the firm wearing shoes that don’t conform to dress code.

Special snowflake gets bent out of shape, because someone is violating dress code with apparent impunity, and approaches manager to ask if the interns could violate dress code too.

Special snowflake’s request is denied.

Special snowflake can’t take no for an answer, and writes a proposal/petition, signed by other special snowflake interns, telling the management why they should be allowed to violate company policy.

All special snowflakes who signed the petition get tossed out on their entitled asses.

Isn’t it amazing when the special snowflakes get into the real world outside their university safe spaces and discover that the real world doesn’t care about their special snowflakery? Rough lesson, boys and girls, but one you should take to heart.

The advice columnist is correct in her response.

Y’all were pretty out of line. You were interns there — basically guests for the summer. Their rules are their rules. This is like being a houseguest and presenting your host with a signed petition (!) to change their rules about cleaning up after yourself. You just don’t have the standing to do that.

Over the past couple of years, we’ve seen Special Snowflakes demand extra time to do their schoolwork, because it interferes with their activism. We’ve seen them violently demand that their opposition be silenced and even deprived of employment! We’ve seen them demand safe spaces and participation trophies. They want passing grades just for breathing and excused delays in examinations, because they’re just too stressed about the perceived injustices they face in this world to study! And universities, in their blinding ignorance, have genuflected in front of these overindulged piglets and bent over backwards to accommodate them for fear of being branded racist, misogynist, or any other offensive “ist” you can think of!

Well, guess what, snowflakes!

That’s not how the real world works.

No one believes you’re special or important because today you identify as a demigender toaster!

An internship is supposed to provide you with an opportunity to learn and get real world experience! You’re certainly not doing anyone a favor by gracing them with your presence, no matter what mommy and daddy told you when they gave you that pony! The work you do will determine your value to the company that affords you said opportunity. They are your host. They are kind enough to take you on and show you the ropes. They certainly don’t need your privileged, disgruntled whining about being forced to wear leather shoes! You don’t like it? Get the fuck out! Your internship is a gift to no one but you, and if you’re extremely lucky,sometimes you’ll even get paid for the opportunity!

A workplace is not a “safe space.” Your manager does not owe you an explanation about why a certain full-time employee may or may not be exempt from a stated workplace policy. And they certainly don’t need a bunch of puerile brats organizing what amounts to a mini protest of policies they don’t like. Your manager is not your friend, parent, or nanny. A workplace is where you learn practical experience in your chosen career, and perhaps, if you really do your job well, you will have an opportunity to join the workforce as a full, productive member!

Oh, and by the way, the person who was “violating” the dress code was a Soldier who had lost her leg! So yes, she was allowed to wear whatever shoes she wanted. What’s really telling is that special snowflake, instead of acknowledging that perhaps interns have no place informing management who, in their view, should be allowed to wear whatever they wanted, claims they would have taken the Soldier’s predicament into consideration when making their recommendations!

What?

Who in the blinding, sniveling fuck should care about what a bunch of sniveling millennials recommend as a dress code at a firm whose leadership quite obviously knows better what kind of image it wants to project? Do special snowflake and her whining cohorts really consider themselves that important?

My friend Amanda has it exactly right in her post about this very same subject this morning. The entire letter shows that special snowflake doesn’t understand what she did wrong. She thinks the interns are somehow higher on the food chain than they actually are, and further believes that the management ought to reconsider their firing!

The selfish, entitled brattery is nauseating! Amanda also notes that special snowflake appears to only be concerned with her own dismissal and not that of her fellow interns, even though she organized this mini-mutiny, and if she had any integrity at all, would hold herself responsible.

She mentions how professionally the proposal was written – just like she was taught at school!

Perhaps her school should have taught her the value of professional conduct, instead of coddling and telling her how special and important she is!

Here’s your “living wage,” douchenuggets!

It had all the makings of a heartwarming victory for the little guy.

A horde of minimum wage workers campaigning for what they claimed they were entitled to: a wage high enough to live in pricey London, because they deserve… because a concession stand cashier selling overpriced sodas and popcorn is entitled to the Pound Sterling equivalent of $14/hour… because RICH CORPORATION IS MAKING LOTS OF MONEY AND SHOULD GIVE, GIVE, GIVE ME WHAT I WANT – EARNED OR NOT.

A famous film maker supported the workers in demanding the cinema owners fork over the outlandishly high salaries, and sniveling mediots called for support of the oppressed workers.

When the company finally gave in, the ecstatic staff celebrated until the job cuts were announced.

Picturehouse Cinemas said that the cost of increasing basic wages at the Ritzy Cinema in Brixton to £8.80 an hour would be absorbed by reducing the number of staff by at least 20, with a redundancy programme starting next month.

Two management posts will be axed along with eight supervisors, three technical staff and other front-of-house workers from its workforce of 93.

And now the workers union is crying that it’s retribution, that the company makes enough money and should not only pay workers more than their labor is worth, but also keep all of them in their jobs, whether they’re needed or not.

Apparently, these unskilled, barely educated, pierced, tattooed freaks feel themselves entitled to dictate to the executives of a company, who are ostensibly better educated and more experienced at running their business, how much profit is sufficient. So they’re demanding that their worthless asses keep their jobs at a higher wage, because their employer has enough profits.

Campaigners claim the Ritzy is the most successful art-house cinema in the UK and is owned by Picturehouse Cinemas, part of Cineworld, which is the largest cinema chain in Europe and has revenues of more than £400m.

Workers posted on Facebook: “This is nothing short of pure vindictive retaliation because we the workers showed that with determination and collectively, we could effect change to make our lives that tiny bit more comfortable.”

You know what makes lives more comfortable? Getting an education. Starting at the bottom and working your way up.

Forcing your employer to pay you more than what your labor is worth will get you only one thing: downsized.

The Duck Flap

I don’t know why I’m even mentioning this, other than I need to get this off my chest, and my Facebook feed is filled with photos of those bearded doofi and calls to boycott A&E.

If you’ve been living under a rock, the flap is over some show on A&E called Duck Dynasty (which I never watch), because the guy starring in it (who looks like a scarier version of Willie Nelson), who is apparently some really successful businessman, but looks like he lives in a rundown trailer in the middle of the Ozarks, said some ignorant shit about gays, so A&E suspended this redneck owing largely to a whole lot of screeching on the part of gay groups and advocates.

Point 1: What he said was absolutely ignorant and repulsive. He went on a rant about how vaj > anus, and how homosexuality is something akin to bestiality.

“It seems like, to me, a vagina…would be more desirable than a man’s anus,” Phil Robertson told the magazine.

“Start with homosexual behavior and just morph out from there: bestiality, sleeping around with this woman and that women and those men…it’s not right,” he’s quoted as saying.

Classless. Stupid. Repulsive. All of the above. For someone who is supposed to be a successful businessman, this Duck Dynasty fellow is sure ignorant about human relationships. It’s as if he thinks relationships are all about where you stick your penis. Additionally, comparing a sexual act between two consenting (human) adults to animal cruelty and abuse (and essentially comparing both human beings to animals merely because of whom they choose to love) – let’s just say it’s not exactly Christian, as this Duck guy claims to be.

But hey – whatever. It’s his views, and I’m not out to change them.

Point 2: Duck guy is a celebrity, and he represents his show, and by extension his employer A&E. The “vaj>ass” remarks were simply in bad taste, and reflected poorly on his employer.  I’m not A&E, nor am I GLAAD or any other homosexual advocacy group, but I would venture an educated guess that had Robertson said “I’m a Christian, and my beliefs are that homosexuality is a sin,” I doubt there would have been much to suspend him for. But no… he had to venture into “gays = beasts” territory, which makes him seem ignorant and crass in the eyes of a lot of people.

Point 3: Robertson’s suspension from A&E has NOTHING to do with his First Amendment rights. The First Amendment protects individuals and groups speech and expression from government prosecution and persecution. It certainly does not protect them from the consequences, which include job loss, and outcry from others when they say something stupid. In other words, Duck guy has every right to air his views about gays, dogs, adulterers or anything else, but he’s not free from the consequences of his words. No one is jailing him for speaking out about his views. No one is imposing fines on him. He’s free to speak and continue speaking. And his employer is free to end the association if need be.

Point 4: Robertson has no right to a job. A&E is and should be free to suspend him, fire him, etc. should the network feel it necessary, for whatever reason. If what Robertson said impacts the station negatively and impacts its bottom line, it should have the right to get rid of him. Again, Duck dude is not free from the consequences of his actions.

People screeching about his First Amendment rights should understand this.

That said…

Point 5: Come on, GLAAD! It’s some redneck on some reality show! It’s not like you’re being hanged for being gay in Iran! Get some perspective. Get an enema. Don’t watch the show. Don’t watch the channel. Boycott whatever advertisers that show has. But understand that everyone has a point of view, and while society in general is a lot more accepting of gays and lesbians, not everyone is going to accept you. Sorry, but it’s true. You can’t force people to change their opinions, and you shouldn’t. I know not everyone is going to like me, because I’m a ginger… or because I was born a Jew… or because I’m an atheist. I know many Christians who tell me I’m going to hell. So what? If I took everything they say about me seriously, I’d be rotting in a mental institution by now, drooling on myself and excited for my next lithium pill.

In other words, chill the hell out!

It’s a redneck on a reality show voicing his opinion in a pretty ignorant manner, not some plot to imprison you for your lifestyle!

I was pretty vocal in my defense of Dan Cathy in the Chick-fil-A flap, because the chain really was persecuted by local and state officials in some areas for its owner merely voicing his opinion. I don’t agree with his views on marriage, but he’s Christian and he’s entitled to voice them without fat, drooling shitbags like Menino in Boston trying to hinder his livelihood because of them.

In this case, Duck guy has no right to a job. His employer is a private employer and has every right to fire him.

So, please – stop yammering on about his rights being violated! All that has happened is that the guy said some pretty ignorant shit in public and his employer decided to end the association. That’s it. Get over it.

ObamaCare operator fired

As I’m sure many of you heard already, Earline Davis, an ObamaCare operator whom Sean Hannity called on the air to quiz her about public reactions to the program, was summarily dismissed from her $25,000/year job after the interview aired.

To be sure, I feel incredibly sorry for Ms. Davis. All she did was answer questions from a caller, who just happened to be Sean Hannity, and who just happened to have put the call on the air. I doubt she meant any harm. She was just telling the truth. She just took a call, as was her job.

According to the transcript at RealClearPolitics.com, here’s what transpired:

DAVIS: Okay, the day I received the call from the radio station, I had to go pick up my best friend that night, and then someone was like, ”someone was looking for you.” But, I don’t know who that person is. So I was like, well I’m going to come back in the morning, because I had to go back to work. So the next day I came back and they had, like, two people escort me upstairs to H.R. And then it was three head people and me, we sat down, and I’m like, “why am I up here?” I figured, okay, they wanna talk about the phone call – the incident.

Then the lady sitting behind the desk; I don’t know what their name is, but the lady that was sitting behind the desk, I guess called up another head lady on her cell phone, so the lady was talking, and I couldn’t really understand what she was saying because she had me on speakerphone. I remember her saying, “We can’t have this type of stuff going on here, so we have to release you.” But they had locked the doors and everything; I guess they didn’t want anybody to come in there.
So when she told me they had to release me, that’s when I put my name tag – my badge – on the desk, and something was going wrong with my cell phone, so that’s when I tried to call my ride to come pick me up, but the lady next to me was just, like, being rude. She had, like, an attitude.

HANNITY: Now, did they give you… You were hired… How long had you been working with this company?

DAVIS: I started September 23.

HANNITY: Okay, so it’s a fairly new job for you. Did they—I assume they put you through some training, right?

DAVIS: Yes sir, they did.

HANNITY: And did they ever tell you that you’re not allowed to take a call from a radio show? Your job was to answer phones.

DAVIS: I did not hear anything about that. There were so many of us in a big group, you can only talk so loud.

HANNITY: Right, and one of the things that struck me. I was really impressed, and I said that to you on Monday. You are patient, you are kind, you answered all our questions. You were totally honest. Wasn’t that what you were hired to do?

DAVIS: Yeah, I’m just out here tryin’ to help everybody. And I know, like, some people have been making bad comments about me. Some people have been making good comments about me. But, some people are like, “Oh, you knew you shouldn’t have said that!” And I’m just like, okay… I kinda felt bad about it. My gosh, I got fired.

HANNITY: And what was the specific reason? When they sat you down, did they give you a specific reason?

DAVIS: They said that no contact with the media. No type of media whatsoever. We’re not allowed to do that at that company.

To be sure, I understand Ms. Davis’ plight. For whatever reason, she was not informed or did not understand the company’s policy regarding media communications. This type of policy isn’t new and it’s not different from any company’s policy. Generally speaking, a company of any significant size will have its own media department. These are people whose job it is to field media inquiries. Generally speaking, that means that any other employee would be stepping out of their lane if they agree to speak to the media.

This should have been made very clear to Ms. Davis during her training, especially since she was a telephone operator, who may get a call from a radio show on the hotline, much like she did from Hannity. This apparently was not made clear. At least from what Ms. Davis said. I would think that if you have telephone operators who could possibly receive a call from the media via the hotline, it would be made expressly clear in both written and verbal form that they are to direct any media calls to the company’s public relations office.

This is certainly the case in the military. When I was a Public Affairs specialist, I conducted training with all troops on how to deal with the media on the battlefield. At my current job, I also received very clear instructions – both verbal and written – on dealing with the media. So the fact that Ms. Davis had not received this training, or at least the policy wasn’t made expressly clear, tells me that the company did not do its job.

Unfortunately, Ms. Davis drew the short straw when she got Hannity on her line, and she got fired for that stroke of bad luck.

I will give Hannity credit for what he did. He gave her $26,000 and promised to help her find another job.

I do hope she finds other employment really soon. She sounds like a nice lady, who was dragged into the deep end of the pool after just a few weeks on the job, without a life jacket.

As for her former employer… Jerks. Just plain jerks.
