The Right to be an Asshole

An associate professor at Georgetown University recently penned a column in the Washington Post describing her confrontation with alt-right neo-Nazi yambag Richard Spencer. Christine Fair proudly admits to have accosted Spencer while he was working out at a local gym, causing him to lose his gym membership.

“Are you Richard Spencer?” she asked him, describing the encounter in an online post. “No. I am not,” he replied.

“I said, ‘Of course you are, so not only are you a Nazi — you are a cowardly Nazi,’ ” Fair said in an interview, invoking a common characterization of Spencer. “I just want to say to you, I’m sick of your crap — that this country belongs [to people like you]. . . . As a woman, I find your statements to be particularly odious; moreover, I find your presence in this gym to be unacceptable, your presence in this town to be unacceptable.”

After Spencer took to the Internet ostensibly to hurt Fair’s feelings by calling her “dumb, ignorant, fat, hideous, triangular and the ugliest woman he’d ever seen” (really Richie – you couldn’t have possibly portrayed yourself any more puerile, illiterate, and insecure), Fair decided to use the Washington Post to publish her screed about how odious Spencer is, and how his status as a festering scrotal pustule entitles her to accost him in a public place.

She details how horrible Spencer is in minute detail, linking to every racist comment she could find.

She indirectly blames Spencer for the tragic death of Bowie State University student Richard Collins III at the hands of Sean Urbanski and the heinous murder of nine churchgoers by Dylann Roof two years ago, as if every incident of racist violence is somehow his fault.

She points out Spencer’s refusal to denounce Hitler or the KKK.

To be sure, I think Spencer is a world class, syphilitic dick drip. As someone who was born Jewish, and who escaped the USSR after multiple abuses and discrimination, I find his views repugnant. There’s very little that sets me off and evokes a nearly violent visceral reaction than racism and prejudice, and he represents everything I hate, having lived through some pretty horrible abuses as a Jewish kid back there.

However… as a veteran and as someone who swore an oath to defend the Constitution and Americans’ rights, I will also defend to the death Spencer’s right to be a syphilitic dick drip, to spout Nazi bullshit, and to advocate whatever hateful, revolting shit he wants. It is his right. And as difficult as it is, I would have to defend it, no matter how nauseating.

Fair took it upon herself to accost a fellow American, because she found his views repugnant. She took it upon herself to claim (and speak for everyone else present) that Spencer’s presence at the gym created a “hostile environment” for gym patrons, when most probably didn’t even know who he was (including the one gym patron who came to his defense, and whom she accused of enabling a neo-Nazi, because she wanted her to stop screeching and let everyone work out in peace). She caused a disturbance, and then claimed she was somehow justified in doing so.

No person with a shred of sense or common decency will defend Spencer’s views, but if we accost him and his ilk, where will this end?

The very SPLC, which Fair apparently holds as an authority on hate groups, has denounced the American Enterprise Institute, Dinesh D’Souza, the TEA Party writ large, Ayaan Hirsi Ali, and others who may be critical of certain religions, social groups, and leftist policies as “hate groups.” Does Fair support “confronting” anyone who doesn’t toe the leftist line and whom the unhinged SPLC labels as a hater?

Do we start accosting anyone with whose views we disagree? Do we assault them? Do we demand that they be kicked out of venues, even if they have paid their membership dues, because we find their views abhorrent?

Where does it end?

Fair’s lack of decorum, impulse control, and general respect for freedom is unsurprising, coming from the unhinged left.

Fact is she accosted someone she didn’t like, when he was causing no disturbance and simply minding his own business, and harassed him and others.

Fact is she narcissistically anointed herself to be the arbiter and authority of who should or should not be allowed to patronize a place of business.

Fact is we have the right to be assholes in this country, and we don’t need her permission – or the permission of any other prognazi shitslurper – to visit a public venue or pay for a membership there.

In her article she portrays herself to have been a heroic, courageous, righteous warrior battling the evil racist right.

Fact is, she’s nothing but a cunt-chafed, unhinged shrew, who takes it upon herself to attack anyone with whom she disagrees, even a former Georgetown professor, who happens to be Muslim, and who happened to have supported Donald Trump.

She’s not courageous. She’s in dire need of a lesson in manners. And maybe some psychological counseling for her rage and narcissism issues.

P.S. – the harridan claims on her Dumblr site that “Despite what some clowns have said, NO ONE finds themselves mocked on #ShitMenSay without harassing me. No one.” The fact that she proudly admits to have confronted another gym patron who was quietly working out and bothering no one, merely because she finds his views repulsive, contradicts that claim. That makes her a liar.

That fact that your views are worlds apart notwithstanding, This is what separates you from people like Ms. Fair.

I may not like what you say, but I will defend unto death your Right to say it.

To hell with that. When was the last time a leftist defended anyone’s right even to merely disagree?

They won’t know how it feels so long as their opponents fight them with both hands tied behind their back.

Use their tactics until they get sick of them. Call out the Congressional Black caucus as a racist group because they don’t allow whites who represent black districts to join. Attack the funding sources of the SPLC, and make sure people who defend them lose their jobs as the racists they are.

Falsely accuse them of sexual harassment every time one of them runs for high office. Break out 3-6 false accusers the week before election day. Have conservative AG’s file frivolous lawsuits when their majority leaders are up for election. Exile reporters whose views you don’t like and talk as you like to the remainder.

      1. We should treat others are you wish to be treated, even though you know they will always treat you as a dog. To do otherwise invites criticism as a hypocrite. Therefore, I will support and defend the Rights of my opposition just as vigorously as I would those who would support me.

There’s a reason the Founders included that “our sacred honor” phrase in the Declaration: they understood that nice wouldn’t cut it, that if they lost they would be remembered as traitors, and that achieving their goal would involve giving up on “nice”. One reason we’re in this mess is that too many people have put too high a value on nice.

  2. Well they both sound like odious human beings, but Fair’s action’s are over the line. I mean, I’m all for freedom of speech and I’ll support your right to spew whatever garbage you want to, as long as it doesn’t cause a clear and present danger. But I also respect the rights of others to call you an ass clown and stupid for your beliefs.

But this woman, based on her actions, is clearly not well and needs to be taken in for psych eval, especially if she is randomly accosting people in the gym. There’s a time and a place for this. You don’t accost people “of note” in the gym, in a doctor’s waiting room, while their with their kids, eating at a restaurant, public bathroom, grocery shopping — you just don’t. It’s tacky and out of line.

    1. I agree with your assessment of Mr. Spence and Ms. Fair and also that Ms. Fair was “over the line”. If ‘asshole’ was a crime, for the specific incidents described in the essay as I see them Ms. Fair could be charged with misdemeanor asshole, maybe even felony asshole. (The possibility of the charge of asshole could eliminate a lot of temptation to deal out ‘street justice’ in many situations.) A greater readiness of the police to lay charges of disturbing the peace might be a serviceable substitute to the charge of asshole.

I disagree with the essayist, there is no right to be an asshole. The is only a natural right to do the right thing. However, in a society of free men with a limited government of men not angels, some occasional behavior that is apparently asshole behavior must be kept beyond the ability of man’s laws to reach. Merely being socially inappropriate is not enough. For example, my tough love might be imagined to be asshole behavior to the emotionally sensitive.

  3. Fair said she was contacted by a corporate representative for the gym last week, who informed her that Spencer’s membership had been terminated.

The loudmouth who confronted the shitstain DIDN’T get her membership terminated??
Why would a gym, who you would think wants to stay out of political bickering, not terminate BOTH.

    1. Probably, because the gym was actually on her side politically, and did not want someone like spencer to use their service? They are private business after all.

  6. Fair is a disgusting piece of shit, in part because she made me defend Spencer.

He may be a lot of things, but he wasn’t at that moment. All he was doing was trying to lift some weights.

It’s part of a very alarming trend in American politics that will eventually lead to balkanization based on political leaning with segregated businesses catering to various ideologies.

That way, someone like Fair won’t have to associate with us rabble.

    1. “Balkanization based on political leaning”. Reminds me of old-school Dutch and Belgian “Verzuiling” (literally: pillarification, silo-ification), where Catholics, Protestants (in Holland), Socialists, secular humanists,… belonged to their own specific HMOs, read specific newspapers, went to separate schools, (in Belgium) belonged to separate trade unions, and patronized businesses in their own “silo”.

      Like

      1. Of course they “belonged to their own specific HMOs”. Catholic Christians don’t want to be doctored by abortionists and Protestants don’t want to do without abortionists.

        1. Actually, at the time this evolved (late 19th C.), abortion was illegal across the Lowlands, and would remain so for many decades.

  7. There is a video on Youtube called “Punch a Nazi” from a currently ficticious show called Social Justice the Musical. Since anyone who disagrees with you is evil, there are no moral compunctions about beating up on them.

I disagree with one of the conclusions in it that the SJWs will come to the realization they are wrong about that. They will stay unrepentant and self-righteous all of their days.

What they do and say now is their badges of honor and others applaud them. A student who forced out professors because of a blowup about Halloween costumes was lauded and awarded on campus. An administrator said freedom of speech doesn’t apply to what he determines to be “hate speech.” They will not stop what they are doing in the current environment.

  9. This is not really a free speech issue though, is it? I do support anyone saying whatever they want without persecution by the goverment. Always. Violently if necessary. But especially in cases like fletchers, i do have to admit that i have absolutly zero sympathy if the horrible things he advocates should be done to other people lead to some of those other people utilising their right to be obnoxious assholes to make his life miserable.
It is kind of karmic. And if the claim that the studio terminated spencers membership is correct, the venue she caused this commotion at seems to agree with her point.

    1. No, it’s not a free speech issue. It’s his right to conduct business with another entity – in this case he had a contract with the gym for which he paid – to use the facility, which this shrew interfered in, demanded said contract be dissolved, all because she anointed herself the arbiter of who should be able to use said gym.

      1. This won’t be the first or last time something like this happens. I mean, they’re so proud of their harassment of others – the gay couple who went after Ivanka, screaming about businesses carrying her products, and, I’m sure, plenty other examples I can’t recall at the moment. Just one more example.

They’ll never, ever go after the evil in their own ranks though; and often defend it (Example I can think of being ‘Sarah’ Butts, and the string of Salon’s pro-pedophilia articles that suddenly came out around that time…)

    2. You know, I keep hearing people complaining about Spencer “advocating” something but never once have they told me of any horrible actions he has done that deserve him being assaulted.

But if punching someone or harassing them for being a “Nazi” is acceptable, then I’m going to send some of these people swimming in a wood chipper. Fair is far.

      Liked by 2 people

      1. I am entirely against punching people, but then calling someone out, even in private is not assault. Also…why the quotation marks? The guy has declared that he want to create a white ethno-state. That is his political goal. Peacefully if possible, but if not, well….

Sir Thomas More: Oh? And when the last law was down, and the Devil turned ’round on you, where would you hide, Roper, the laws all being flat? This country is planted thick with laws, from coast to coast, Man’s laws, not God’s! And if you cut them down, and you’re just the man to do it, do you really think you could stand upright in the winds that would blow then? Yes, I’d give the Devil benefit of law, for my own safety’s sake!

Short and overweight, believing a membership to a gym will somehow change her, when the change she hopes for is riding a unicorn.
One last question, is she really an associate professor at Georgetown?

Having said that, the Gym is the unquestioned villain in this story, terminating Spencer’s membership because Fair objected. If anyone’s membership should have been terminated, it was Fair’s. She was the one disturbing the peace in the Gym.
