New Theme? New Design?

I’ve been thinking that it may be time to redesign the blog a bit. I’ve been using the Notepad theme since I moved over to WordPress back in 2011, and it’s been a nice little theme, I think. But I have heard from folks who say it’s tough to read, and that the reply threads are hard to follow.

What do you guys think? Should I change it?

So it looks like the biggest issue folks have is the lack of indents in the comments section. I have been looking around, and found the following… Let me know what you think.

Comments are a bit more delineated.

Comments are a bit more delineated.

This has a little cleaner design.

I can also change the colors to something other than the weird teal this has going on now, and I can add a “read more” button to longer posts.

I think with this design, I can also add a “recent comments” feature to the sidebar.

I kind of like this one, and I want to make sure that it’s easy to read for folks. I know some of my readers do have vision issues, and I don’t want to make it more difficult for them to access the blog.

  1. The color is fine. Readability (dark letters on light yellow) is fine. The problem with reply threads is all about the amount of indent. Make the reply indent larger and the readability issue goes away. Overall I agree that the threads are hard to follow but if you fix the indents I see no problem with the site and no opportunity to make a big improvement. You aren’t selling gold bullion, sex toys, or political influence, it’s a blog – and, by the way, one of my favorite ones. Even when I disagree with you I admire the artful way you use language to express your opinion. You could change the theme because you want to but except for the indents, there is nothing broken that you need to fix.

    Others may disagree. Whatever.

    1. The indents are definitely a pain, but I’m not sure I can change them unless I change the theme. Thanks for the kind words. Truly. They mean a lot.

  2. Gotta agree with Richard.
I come here for what you have to say & how you say it, even when I disagree.
The indents really are the only thing(s) that I find annoying

  3. I pretty much agree with Richard. The crazy indenting can still be highly confusing even now that I know what to look for. The color doesn’t bother me at all.

The rest of this is me brainstorming, feel free to ignore…

If/when that’s not an issue, then In an ideal world, one would be able to directly reply to a reply to a comment (third level), or even to a reply to a reply to a comment (fourth level)…but then again, you don’t want that to be limitless, lest you end up with comments a mile tall and one letter wide. Whatever the limit ends up being, of course one can get by with “@Dickhead–you ugly sack of putrefying shit!” if one wants to reply to Richard Cranium but his comment is already maxed out on levels.

One thing I might add is a “recent comments” sidebar, or better yet, a “posts recently commented on” sidebar, so if someone comments on a slightly older post, it’s easy to tell. If I recall correctly, that’s the sort of thing you can add (if it exists) to any theme that has a right hand sidebar in it.

Something you might not be aware of (and then again, maybe you are and like it this way, but I won’t know til I mention it) is that only you and Rob seem to be able to “like” peoples’ replies–and such is not visible to general readers. (I get wordpress and email notifications, and I’m happy to know you like ’em when you do.)

And, way, way down in the noise, I was trying to find a post a couple of months old, but your posts are so long scrolling through “March” or “February” required waiting on additional loads. Maybe, once a post gets a few days old, you could put a “read more” break in it.

    1. Actually it occurs to me that I should have named “Richard Cranium” “Huey Golova” instead.

    2. I can add a recent comments sidebar to almost any theme. The reason I didn’t is because there was just so much other crap on the sidebar. I can look at adding it, and maybe subtracting something else.

It seems the most problematic thing is the comment threads and the lack of indents, so… I was looking around at the available themes, and I found one that may fit the bill. I can change the colors to whatever I want, but it seems to be cleaner.

  4. Ah, excellent! I look forward to my replies to Huey Golova being more obvious.

    1. Dang it, I thought I had hit “reply” on that. Happened to me yesterday too. Better check my cranium.

    2. LOL! If you want to be technically correct, golova is feminine, so you want to say Huyevaya Golova.😉

    3. Damn I took the class twenty years ago. Maybe ten years ago I’d’ve seen that.

That’s what I get for trying to be bilingually clever.

  5. To respond to your update, I can’t see how the comments work on the second one, but either one of them ought to be good. (Personally I like teal, but Please Pick The Color You Want, just as I ask that you Please Pick The Ballistic Hardware You Want.)

  6. The proposed organization scheme looks good on its face. It’s a pity that you’re apparently on WordPress.com, though. Self-installed WordPress blogs have access to a far wider variety of themes and third-party plugins.

BTW, please don’t use teal. That color is evil and must die.
