Bring It!

It appears the liberty Republicans in the Senate are ready for a fight.

Earlier this week, GOP Sens. Rand Paul (Ky.), Mike Lee (Utah), and Ted Cruz (Texas) wrote a letter to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) pledging to “oppose the motion to proceed to any legislation that will serve as a vehicle for any additional gun restrictions.”

Marco Rubio added his name to that letter yesterday, joining the group of GOP senators , who promise to filibuster any legislation that further erodes the citizens’ right to keep and bear arms as protected by the Second Amendment.

Next month, Reid plans to bring to the floor a bill that would expand background checks and penalties on straw purchases of firearms. The portion of the bill on illegal trafficking of firearms has bipartisan support, including from Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), the ranking Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Grassley is also preparing gun control legislation he will offer as an alternative to the package from Democrats.

We don’t know what Grassley’s proposal will contain, so I will refrain from commenting on it for now.

In the meantime, the Hill reports that our fearless leader has taken it upon himself to push gun control via the use of executive power.

The president has used his executive powers to bolster the national background check system, jumpstart government research on the causes of gun violence and create a million-dollar ad campaign aimed at safe gun ownership.

The executive steps will give federal law enforcement officials access to more data about guns and their owners, help keep guns out of the hands of criminals and the mentally ill, and lay the groundwork for future legislative efforts.

Obama’s steps began the same day he unveiled his 23 gun control proposals in January, when he issued a memorandum requiring all nine federal law enforcement agencies to submit guns they confiscate to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) for tracing.

A million dollar ad campaign aimed at safe gun ownership… You mean kind of like Eddie the Eagle, which has reached millions of kids and taught them safe firearm handling as early as kindergarten? I can’t imagine they mean the MAIG ad with the dimwit in the truck, who doesn’t know the basic rules of handling a gun safety!

That’s right. Shut down the White House to tours, cancel the Easter Egg hunt, but waste money on duplicating the efforts of an already successful program that has existed in our schools for years!

Real smart!

In any case, back to my point…

Liberty Republicans in the Senate know what needs to be done. They have made a commitment to support and protect the Constitution of the United States, and they are doing so, even against domestic enemies who threaten the integrity of our Law of the Land.

Senators Rand Paul, Mike Lee, Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio – you have our gratitude. I wonder if the crotchety old GOP establishmentarians will join you, or whether they’ll come up with yet more creative names for you “wacko birds.”

  1. Paul voted yes on Hagel and Kerry. Rubio yes on Brennan and Kerry. My trust is tainted. And Grassley “will offer as an alternative to the package from Democrats.” Alternative – is that anything like a compromise? Republicans are very good at compromising the people.

    1. I know. They’re not perfect. BUT… that said… they’re the best we have, and they’re pretty damn good overall.

  2. Grassley isn’t. What’s needed is for our Senators to rise, en masse, and tell these gun-grabbing bug-wits that ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. You’ve been chipping away at our Constitution long enough! We aren’t going to take your BS one day longer. Take ONE step towards passage of any more gun-laws and we get our friends in the House to file articles of impeachment against this entire administration. You MAY win, but he’ll STILL be tainted as four of the last 8 elected Democrat “Presidents” having been impeached. ( Clinton elected twice and now Obama the same.)
