You often hear this meme that Democrats are kinder to the poor, that they care more about the poor, that they work to implement policies that help the poor…
After all, you never hear about how politicians want to protect the rich. Instead, it’s all about helping poor people, raising them up… blah, blah, blah.
So it makes me wonder how they can claim to care for and love the poor, and then make it prohibitively costly for them to defend themselves.
Take, for example, the latest proposal from the Demtard of Illinois Luis Gutierrez.
Gutierrez is quick to note that lower-profile shootings claim many more lives each year than the mass killings that generate broad media attention, and that handguns — not assault rifles — are most often used in those murders. In 2011, for instance, 97 percent of Chicago’s 362 gun murders involved handguns. Not one of them spurred a congressional hearing.
Under current federal law, foreign-made handguns that fail to meet certain safety criteria outlined by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) are not allowed into the United States. In determining whether a handgun is legal for import, the ATF weighs features like firing-pin locks, loaded-chamber indicators, the quality of grip and what type of metal was used in construction.
But the same standards to do not apply to handguns produced domestically. In fact, the Consumer Product Safety Act explicitly exempts firearms and ammunition from its consumer-safety rules.
What are they really after? They’re out to make handguns impossible for poor people to afford by making them conform to more expensive, more extensive standards. In fact, what they’re doing is using the Consumer Product Safety Act to ban a certain type of firearm that may be more affordable for people on tight budgets… for people living in neighborhoods that aren’t particularly safe… for the poor.
This is not the first time Democrats have tried to make firearms unaffordable for the poor they claim to love and care about. Maryland is imposing all sorts of fees on people wishing to exercise their Second Amendment rights in their state. A fee of $20 or $25 may not seem like a lot, but after spending several hundred dollars on a firearm, a training requirement and a renewal fee, it could prevent some from making that purchase, choosing instead to buy… oh, I don’t know… FOOD for their family with that money!
Will that serve to reduce gun ownership? You bet it will. For the people who need it most.
Onerous licensing fees and favoritism toward the wealthy and powerful who want to keep and bear arms are nothing new. It reduces the ability of regular folks and low income persons to defend themselves from violence and makes them more dependent on the State to protect them. This is what Democrats want. That’s what they’ve always wanted – a more powerful government.
If passed, this latest travesty will not only make firearms more cost prohibitive for lower income Americans, but it will increase black market activity and make criminals out of folks who simply want a fighting chance against armed thugs in their midst.
So why do Democrats want to make criminals out of poor people? Why do they hate the lower-income Americans?
You tell me!
